Thank you very much for intending to invite me to speak at your event. Here is what you need to know.
I love speaking about Web standards, particularly CSS, SVG, Optimization, and Humorous talks about the life of developers. My talks not only cover the general overview of a subject, but the details and how technologies are used, from the basics all the way to using them to solve common design problems.
I require flight, ground transportation and accommodation to be covered, as well as meals for the entire duration of the conference, plus an honorarium. I’m a freelancer—not backed by any company, so spending time traveling is something I can’t afford to do all the time. I also expect flight, ground transportation and accommodation to be taken care of up front, not reimbursed.
That being said, My fee is open to negotiation, especially for non-profit, community-driven events. If you would like me to create and deliver a new talk, then I expect to be paid for the extra time that goes into making it. I also sometimes waive my fee for smaller events in exchange for covering one or two extra nights in the hotel. (It’s a good chance to experience whatever city I’m in.) In the case I give a talk for free (i.e. minus the fee), I expect the talk to be available for free to everyone.
